Dr. Rajan Mahtani is one of the most notable businessman in Zambia. Apart from his successful business practices, he is also known for his philanthropic contributions and charitable acts. Among these contributions, a significant contribution in the field of education recognised was the establishment of the Steven Malama award. This award was instituted by Finance Bank Zambia on behalf of Dr. Rajan Mahtani who holds the position of the Chairman in the financial institution. The award was established for honouring the significant contributions of late Steven Malama, a distinct legal professional from Zambia. Late Steven Malama is lauded for the merger of Barrister’s Bar and Solicitor’s Bar into a single bar after major persuasion of the Government of Zambia. This merger has helped significant number of legal professional, law graduates and law enthusiasts to get affiliations and start their practice without bureaucratic hassles.
The Steven Malama award is given to the top graduating student from the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal education, who also qualifies for the bar in their first attempt. The award was instituted in the year 2012, given for the first time in 2013 and since then, it is given on an annual basis to the deserving students. The award carries a plaque, a certificate and a cash prize of K15,000 which has provided significant financial help for the winning students in furthering their career. At the same time, the award and the recognition associated with it has helped the institute improve its ranking in terms of quality of education and improved student performance. The award for the year 2018-19 was received by Emmanuel Bwalya Kaluba who wrote an article thanking Dr. Mahtani for his contributions. This article was published in the Daily Mail.
